Trout Fishing Guide
Catches More Fish
Trout fishing is a
great adventure sport. It is a fresh-water sport. It is usually
carried out on the river-shores and ice-capped mountain
streams. Fast and high altitude streams at the river and lakes
are ideal for trout fishing.
It is a fun and challenging
sport.
As a fisherman, it is important that you
always consider what type of trout you are after and their
feeding habits to better understand and plan your approach.
There are three very popular types of
trout:
- Speckled trout (brook trout)
- Rainbow trout
- Brown trout
The species and type will depend on where you are fishing at
and what part of the world you are in.
Brook trout (speckled trout) thrive in smaller streams of
good water quality, in pools of water more shallow than where
you typically find other types of trout. They are smaller in
size than other trouts but can be very aggressive.
You may be surprise to learn that the brook trout is
actually no trout at all. It is a member of the salmon family
as are the trouts, salmons, and pikes. But the brook trout, and
the lake trout, are actually chars.
Chars differ by having light-colored spots on top of a dark
background. It is just the opposite for trout and salmon.
Another not readily discernable difference is the amount of
teeth; char have extra teeth in the roof of the mouth, a
feature that allows for gripping food.
In the warm months, the favored fare for brook trouts seem
to be insect.
Caddisflies, mayflies and blackflies are heavily fed upon,
as are stoneflies, both in the nymph and adult stages.
Outside the warmer months, larger fish will eat frogs and
other fishes Rainbow trout are typically native to the west
coast of USA but due to stocking, they are found in many other
areas as well. They occupy large water of streams and rivers
and have different habitats than the other two types.
They are famous for their "tail-walking" which is similar to
water acrobats and is quite exciting for many fishermen to
watch.
The key to putting rainbows on the stringer is light tackle.
An ultra-light rod and reel spooled with six-pound or lighter
line will produce more strikes and provide exciting action.
Like all trout, rainbows have definite feeding periods which
may begin and end suddenly. There are days, though, when it
seems they feed for hours.
However, early morning and late afternoon are favored times
and most trout are caught during these periods. On streams,
larger fish are likely to be found in deep pools while smaller
rainbows feed in shallow riffles.
Trout face upstream to wait for mayflies, caddis flies,
stoneflies, dobsonflies and dragonflies to appear above them.
When heavy insect hatches are on, you may see evidence of
feeding trout by circular rings or riseforms on the water's
surface.
The Brown trout is larger in size compared to the Brook
trout and the Rainbow trout. It is found in abundance in many
areas of Europe and USA. brown trout are one of the most
widespread species of the trout and salmon family.
The reason for the brown's great success in the U.S. is that
this fish can live in higher water temperatures than the other
salmon and trout; also it is very adaptable to varying bodies
of water.
Although the brown trout is such a plentiful species, do not
be fooled into thinking that fishing for these freshwater
predators will be easy; browns can be the most finicky eaters
of all the different trout species.
They are wary of fishing lures and bait and not aggressive
as the brook trout.
More patience are required when fly
fishing for brown trout. They are usually found in
deeper pools of water and most often feed early in the morning
or late in the afternoon.
Before you set off for your trout fishing trip, do you
homework. Find out as much about the area/streams/rivers that
you will be fishing on.
Are there many fishermen fishing there
too?
What's the temperature and
climate?
Is the area a public or government owned that has
regulations?
Go on the internet and join a forum so you can ask around
people who have fished there before. It is better to prepare
yourself in advance with appropriate clothing and equipments
required according to area you are going to visit.
Casual clothing package such as light shirts and shorts
works well at the warmer spots. Additional slip-on and loafers
are generally recommended for high altitude fishing. They are
good water-soaking outfits and help protect toes as well.
Lighting equipments such as torch are of help in a crisis
situation. Apart from general fishing equipments, specific
equipments such as rods, line, hooks, reel, spoon are all
required for trout fishing, and should be carried in the
back-pack.
It is better to check the equipments in advance. Rod should
be pumped enough and reel should be oiled, not to have
difficulty after travelling. While you are fishing, be as quiet
as possible as any noise can be easily perceived as any kind of
disturbances over the surface.
