Fly fishing | A Brief History
fly fishing is an ancient, distinctive angling method, developed primarily for trout and now extended to other species. Artificial flies are constructed ? "tied" ? in sizes and colors to match naturally occurring insects or baitfish. Fly rods are relatively light and long, and are made in a variety of weights to match the size of the fish being hunted. Fly reels are manual and of a simple spool design to accommodate the fly line and backing. Fly lines are 20-30 meters long and are matched to the rod according to weight. Because the fly itself adds very little weight, the fly line must be heavy enough to flex the rod and carry the fly to the target. A leader of 2-3 meters is used between the fly line and the fly itself.

How Do I Properly Tie a Leader onto My Fishing Line?
If you are talking about tying a tapered monofilament leader to a fly fishing line I use a nail knot almost all the time. Sometimes I use an Albright knot. The manufacturers of the fly line usually include a paper with the line that shows you how to tie these common knots. Both are pretty easy to tie. I prefer the nail knot because it results in a more slender knot that goes through the guides more easily. Go to the web sites referenced by Shasoki and the others who have provided answers to your question and look for the nail and albright knots. They will probably be the easiest for you to tie.
Sport fishing
Sport fishing is a form of recreational fishing where the primary reward is the challenge of finding and catching the fish rather than the culinary or financial value of the fish's flesh. The distincion is not completely rigid - in many cases, sport fishers will also eat their captures. However, the philosophies and tactics used for sport fishing are usually sufficiently different from "feed fishing" to make the distinction clear enough.
Sport fishing methods vary according to the area being fished, the species being targeted, the personal strategies of the angler, and the resources available, ranging from the aristocratic art of fly fishing invented (?) in Great Britain, to the high-tech, incredibly expensive methods used to chase marlin and tuna. However, in virtually every case, the fishing is done with rod and reel rather than with nets or other aids.
